Types of Braces to Straighten Teeth: Which is Best for Me?

Often times, the words “I think you need braces” is the last thing you want to hear from your dentist or orthodontist. However, most people that have had braces would agree they are worth the results they provide.

The main question most patients that we see have is “what type of braces are best for me?”

Adults, children, patients with mild crowding of the teeth, or patients with severe occlusion can all benefit from braces, but it isn’t a “one size fits all” solution.

In this article, we’re going to cover three different kinds of braces we offer here at Jordan Orthodontics, which will give you a better understanding of which braces might be right for you.

Traditional metal braces for children and patients with severe cases

interdental-toothbrush When it comes to fixing teeth crowding, misalignment, and other issues metal braces are the gold standard even to this day. We recommend metal braces for children, simply because they work great, and compliance is a non issue (because they cannot remove them).

From time to time, parents will ask us about Invisalign or other teeth straightening solutions for their child’s teeth, but we do not recommend any treatment like that at a younger age, because compliance problems (kids not wearing them correctly or removing them) are likely to arise, and thus the results of treatment are compromised.

So, if you have a child that is in need of braces, or an adult with severe occlusion and want the best results possible, metal braces are an excellent choice.

Invisalign for teens and adults with mild crowding issues

Clear aligners such as Invisalign have gained immense popularity in recent years, especially amongst the adult population.

Many adults that should have gotten braces as kids or teens didn’t for one reason or another, and now thanks to Invisalign they are able to straighten their teeth in mild to moderate cases without the social stigma that is often attached to “adult braces.”

Teenagers can also be candidates for Invisalign in certain instances, but unlike metal braces (which are not removable), Invisalign treatment is comprised of a set of removable aligners that must be worn for the majority of the day.

A key benefit of Invisalign is the aligners can easily be removed for important life events such as weddings, class reunions, and events of that nature.

So, if you’re an adult and are looking for a nearly invisible teeth straightening solution, Invisalign clear aligners may be just what you need to straighten your smile without traditional metal braces.

Ceramic braces as a happy medium

While they are similar in structure to regular braces, they are made from a translucent material, making them much less obvious to others that you are wearing them.

Ceramic braces provide many of the great features of regular braces, without the dark metal brackets. As a result, they are popular among adults with severe crowding issues where Invisalign is not recommended.
